CBT
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is “problem-focused” and “action-oriented” meaning it is used to treat specific problems and behaviours.
CBT works by changing people’s attitudes and their behaviour by focusing on the thoughts, images, beliefs and attitudes that are held (a person’s cognitive processes) and how these processes relate to the way a person behaves, as a way of dealing with emotional problems.
Therapists who use the CBT approach look at the client’s personal meaning they put on certain beliefs and how it has evolved in their childhood as well as looking the relationship between their thoughts, problems and behaviour.
CBT therapists help their clients to challenge these behaviours or thoughts and replace them with the use of practical strategies.
